Carla Kay (Murphy) Showalter of Capron, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the age of 63. She was born June 6, 1961 in Canton, Ohio, to Daryl Owen Murphy and Sharon Rae (Lauer) Murphy.
Preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Murphy; infant sister, Kellie Jane Murphy; infant granddaughter, Shayna Showalter; grandparents, Lester and Carrie Murphy and Richard and Erma Lauer; aunt, Nancy Kiefaber; and her beloved faithful dog, Bitbit.
Carla is survived by her daughter, Courtney (Josh Coleman) Showalter and son Daryl Showalter. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Cody, Jesse, and Emily Stone and Slater, Zeke, and Greyson Showalter; a great-granddaughter, Ellie Ann Stone; her brothers, Daniel Murphy and Collin (Kristin) Murphy; her nieces and nephew, Mackenzie, Lukas and Kylee Murphy and her uncle, Bill (Debbie) Murphy; and aunt, Karen (Eldon) Sheffer. Many cousins were also a part of her life, especially Debbie Murphy Leopold; and good neighbor, Victor Graves.
Carla attended Louisville High School in Louisville, Ohio, for four years and then moved to Virginia where she spent the remainder of her life. In 1990 she graduated from nursing school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse for the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a nurse Carla dearly loved her patients, particularly the elderly, and would treat them with much attention as if they were her grandparents. Carla was an extremely caring, kind and loving person who always placed others above herself.
Besides her family, she loved her little country home outside of Capron and enjoyed decorating it, doing a little gardening and at one time even raising a few chickens. Carla had spunk, a sweet country spirit and a will to make it even though life was often a challenge and not always easy for her. When times were rough she would often repeat the words of the song made popular by Carrie Underwood, “Jesus, Take the Wheel”. Be assured, Carla’s family and friends will miss this dear sweet soul, her beautiful smile and her laughter which she so easily shared with others. May Carla rest in heavenly peace.
A special gathering to remember and honor Carla will take place at a later date. Messages of condolence may be shared with the family at www.woodlawnnorfolk.com.
And if I go,
while you're still here...
Know that I live on,
vibrating to a different measure
--behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me,
so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
--both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
...I will be there.
