

John B. Briggs, 84 of Chesapeake, Virginia and formerly of Bay Drive, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. died August 27, 2017 after a long illness. He was a Native of Chesapeake (South Norfolk) Virginia. John was preceded in death by his parents, Maysville Jones Briggs and Linwood L. Briggs, Sr. and brother, Linwood L. Briggs, Jr.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife, Ruth S. Briggs; his twin sister; Mary Briggs Kelley Callahan, of Lee, New Hampshire; nephew, Robert L. Briggs, of Chesapeake, VA; niece, Linda Rae Briggs Phelps; nephew, Gene Phelps of Virginia Beach, VA; niece, Mary Lou Kelley Breeze, of Durham, N.C.; niece, Leigh Ann Kelley Foster of Lee, New Hampshire; nephew, Orby Kelley, Jr. of Dublin, Ohio; sister- in- law, Frankie York (Tom) of Norfolk, VA; niece, Meredith Young, of Norfolk, VA; nephew, Christopher Sutton (Piper) of Coinjock, N.C.; sister- in-law, Sharon Sutton of Virginia Beach, VA and 13 great nieces and nephews.
John retired from Atlantic Lift Systems/Clarklift of Virginia after 23 years as parts manager. He was salesman for South Norfolk Auto Parts for 20 years and was manager/operator of Briggs Exxon Service Center, South Norfolk, for several years. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1958.
Johnny was a kind and caring man, always showing concern for his neighbors, even during his years with personal health issues.
He was hardworking with many talents and there was nothing he could not do. He took great pride in his homes and yards, and loved improving both, with included landscaping, building a deck, porch-Florida room and boat ramp, performing all the work himself. He had installed underground sprinkler systems in both his homes.
John loved playing his antique player piano for family & friends, which he refinished and rebuilt. He had a large collection of music rolls from a variety of music.
Johnny enjoyed the monthly luncheon meetings of his high school’s alumni, South Norfolk Old Timers Club, he was a past member of Lifestyle Center, Chesapeake Regional Hospital and a member of the Providence Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, 5497 Providence Road, Virginia Beach, Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may meet with the family at the church fellowship hall following the service. Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Bell will be officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk.
