

Joseph L. Toben, 88, U.S. Navy Retired, passed away in Virginia Beach, VA on January 12, 2015. A native of Ohio, he was the son of Joseph Grover and Elizabeth Toben. He served 30 years in the U.S. Navy with duty stations in Pascagoula, MS; San Diego, CA; Charleston, SC; Norfolk, VA; Naples, Italy; and finally Virginia Beach, VA. Upon retiring, he became an honored Red Cross Volunteer, working at the Boone Clinic Pharmacy for over a decade. He enjoyed photography, bowling, and golf. He delighted his children in creating seasonal macramé hangings. He and his wife, Virginia, enjoyed gardening and relished the many “Yard of the Month” awards earned as a result of their labors. He was a voracious reader and loved working cross word puzzles. In recent years he became an avid mahjong, poker, and word game player on his various electronic devices. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Dell (Lewis) Toben. He is survived by three daughters, Linda Jokeil, Debbie Woodard (Arthur), and Brenda Toben; two sons, Steve Ferrer and Ron Toben (Janice). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Teri, Angie, Cyndi, Jay, Carol (Rob - Dad’s golf buddy), Jennifer, Ryan, Melissa, Carl, Jonathan, Alexandra, Taylor and Connor; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his devoted family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Kings Grant House Assisted Living for their kind care of their father during his residency. They would also like to extend a special thank you to the third floor staff at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital whose kindness and support made a difficult time more bearable.
