

Larry Lee Blevins, 64, died on Monday, December 10, 2012. He is survived by his daughter Ashley, his mother Ellen, and his favorite (and only) sister Barbara, as well as his nephew Jerry Smith, his great nephew Jordan Smith, and many longtime friends including Danette Blevins, Patty Zubeck Means, Pat Burns, Larry McClelland, Chip Pitts, and Ray Polhamus. He is predeceased by his father, Richard Lee Blevins.
Larry was an avid supporter of the arts and he loved a variety of music. He enjoyed many hobbies and interests over the years, including gardening, sailing, photography, restoring and driving MG sports cars, exploring Paris and learning to speak French, watching classic movies, and later, hitting golf balls. He loved dogs, especially Basset Hounds, and volunteered his time with Basset Rescue of Old Dominion (brood-va.org). Larry had a very dry and witty sense of humor; many of his quirky sayings and ways will be remembered and shared by family and friends for years to come.
Larry was born in Portsmouth, VA, on April 5, 1948, and lived there during the early years of his childhood. He then grew up and lived most of his life in Virginia Beach before relocating to Arlington, VA, in 1987. He was a lifelong student and attended many colleges, classes, and workshops to continue his pursuits in learning. He recently retired from a 25 year career as a producer/director of informational films with the Communications Division of the Department of the Treasury/ Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. Previously, he worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard making safety and instructional films; prior to that, he taught film production and photography classes at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach.
Larry served in the U.S. Marine Corps from August 1968- January 1970. He was awarded a Bronze Star with “V” and a Purple Heart w/2 award stars for his service in Vietnam. He then received an honorable discharge in January 1970.
The family is planning a memorial service in the spring to celebrate his life.
