Mamie Lou Salaam

Mamie L. Salaam was born on October 14, 1950 in Raleigh, NC to the late Charles Webb, Jr. and Ruth Mae Gaines. Mamie lived most of her life in Norfolk, VA after moving from North Carolina as a teenager, she resided with her mother Ruth. On Jan. 24, 1969, Mamie married Sahib A. Salaam, Sr., they settled down in Norfolk where they lovingly raised 5 beautiful children, 1 girl and 4 boys.

Mamie was extremely devoted to her 5 children. She took pride in their developments in character, education and sense of responsibility and accountability as well as her interests. She attended Calvary Revival Church where she participated in church activity and support groups.

Mamie enjoyed cooking, gardening and shopping. She loved puzzles, puzzle books and sewing. She enjoyed spending time with family especially during the holidays. She always provided a place of comfort for the family and our friends. She didn’t like seeing no one homeless unless it was their choice.

Mamie is preceded in death by her parents, ex-husband of 16 years. Sahib A. Salaam, Sr., 2 sons, Sahib A. Salaam, Jr., Jamal Aekins and brother, Raymond Gaines. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, 1 daughter, 2 sons, Ronette (Melvin) Haynes, Talib (Mattiee) Aekins, Khalid Aekins, 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; five sisters, Gilda Adcock, La Vern (Leroy) Turrentines, Glenda (Terry) Daye, Charlene (Raymond) Hargrove and Robin Gaines. She is cherished in memory by a host of loving nieces, nephews and many special neighbors, friends and church members.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 12pm, Friday, March 22, 2024 at Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow the service in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. After the services the family welcomes everybody back to the Woodlawn Funeral Home reception hall to fellowship and share memories of Mamie.
