Margie Smith Lanning

Margie was born as one of ten children on January 21, 1930 in Chocowinity, NC to William Harvey and Minnie Elizabeth Barrington Smith. She worked for many years at Willis Wayside in their sewing room. She retired as manager in 1995 and moved to Pennsylvania. She was an accomplished seamstress known for making elaborate window dressings. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, word search puzzles and sitting in her swing drinking tea. She returned to Va Beach in 2020 to be closer to family and friends.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Louise Smith, Doris Res, Evaleen Elliot, Euleus Smith, William Smith, Elizabeth Clark, Lucille McDonald and Ruby Meeks. Left to cherish her everlasting memories are her children, Deborah Gernhard (Joseph), James Lanning Jr. (Betty), of Virginia Beach; Susan Gregory of Newark NY and Judy Readinger (Kevin) of Northampton PA; her grandchildren Christina Whiting, James Gernhard, Melissa Shena, Cynthia Jane Curiel, Samantha Bergman, Sierria Lanning and Amanda Readinger; her brother Thurman Smith (Edna) of Plymouth NC; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 10 AM at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 E Virginia Beach Blvd Norfolk VA 23502. Following the graveside service a reception will be held at 11 AM at Aragona Church of Christ, 527 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
