Myron W. Curtis, aged 100, of Pungo, Virginia, passed away on September 17, 2021. Born November 6, 1920 to the late Mary Elizabeth Curtis and Frank Curtis, Myron was raised in Knoxville, TN. Shortly after graduating Knoxville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as an airman mechanic. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1943. His final assignment was Flight Engineer on a Navy Lockheed Super Constellation involved in a mission to map the earth’s magnetic field.
After 21 years in the Navy, Myron went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Industrial Education at Old Dominion University. He taught industrial arts at Kempsville High School and Virginia Beach Vocational School for 18 years, retiring in 1984.
Myron will be best remembered for his skills and talent in wood turning. He was a founding member of the Tidewater Turners of Virginia and remained a vital member until his death. He was an instructor and lecturer at many national wood working symposia and was most proud of his affiliation with Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. Myron was a legendary mentor and coach to woodturners in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
In addition to his parents, Myron was predeceased by his son Sandford H. Curtis and his sister, Evelyn H. Pope. He is survived by his wife Sue Barton Harris, sons Edwyn Alan Curtis (Kristine) of Holland, Michigan and Michael Curtis (Joy) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, two granddaughters and two great- granddaughters.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 2pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23502.
