NORFOLK- Nehemiah Cooper, Jr. passed away on September 9th, 2013. He was born August 30, 1940 to Nehemiah and Alma Cooper, both deceased, in Memphis, Tennessee where he attended school. Later he left in 1957, and continued his education at East Tech High School in Cleveland, Ohio. He met Beverly Jean Jefferson the summer of 1959. They later married on April 25, 1961. He became the father of four children, Katherine Cooper Collins of Shaker Hts., Ohio, David (Carol) of Columbus, GA., Mary Cooper of Norfolk, VA., and Sherry Joice of Virginia Beach, VA. Cooper is also the grandfather of six, Jamie, David, Daniel, Lauren, Lynnsey and Chelsea, as well as the great-grandfather of two, JaiMarie and Jasiah. He leaves one brother, Jerome Cooper, step-mother, Corine Cooper and two aunts, Susie and Carroll, all of Memphis, TN., and a host of other relatives and friends. Cooper worked as a carpenter for over thirty years and retired in 1987, after numerous injuries and surgeries. He took on a new profession of being a baby-sitter for his grandchildren. He was baptized in Memphis, Tennessee, and continued his walk with God at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Cooper never changed, he was fair whether you were his friend or not. He was quite objective-never letting friendship stand in the way of his judgment or his belief about an individual. Cooper was hard but fair. He expressed the principle of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, the Golden Rule Matt 7:12. Cooper had a great amount of patience and compassion for children, young adults and the elderly. If he’d promised them he was going to do something, he was always prompt to follow through on that promise. He was a very good friend to his friends, and he was well-liked. Life is a gift, appreciate it. Thank you for your prayers and your out-pouring of condolences, love and support. On behalf of the Cooper family may Jehovah God bless each and every one of you. Love, Beverly J. Cooper. A visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Sunday September 15, from 6-8pm., and funeral service on Monday, September 16, at 12:00pm at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel and interment following at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered to the family online at www.woodlawngroup.com.
