Nellie Baker Saunders

Nellie Baker Saunders, 85, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on March 18, 2014, after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s. Nellie was born in Nash County, NC, on November 12, 1928, to the late Tollie Mae Bachelor Baker and Claude Wright Baker. After moving to Norfolk, she married the late Wilson L. Saunders on November 23, 1956, and they had one daughter, Terrie Saunders. Mrs. Saunders had a wonderful sense of humor and loved spending time with family and friends, always ready to share a good joke. She was employed for years as an orthodontist assistant with Dr. R. Glen Owens and Dorfman, constantly enjoying the company of fellow employees and all the patients. Nellie attended Cornerstone Baptist Church until health issues confined her to the home where she fought a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. Survivors include her daughter Terrie of the home; a sister Dot Williams of Rocky Mount, NC; brothers Billy Baker of Yorktown, VA, and Tom Baker of Newport News, VA, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Viola Carter and Ruth Williamson; and brothers Carl Baker, Cecil Baker, and Ned Baker. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, at Woodlawn Funeral Home Mausoleum Chapel.
