Noel Donald Self

Don Self, 77, was born to the late Noel Douglas and Eloise Barbour Self. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Pam Self, and his children: Callie Johnson, husband DeWitt, and four children, Ashley, Rachel, Lyndsey, and Maria Jo; Donna Magoncia, husband Joe, and three children Hunter, Christian, and Donnie; Jennifer Riley, husband Paul, and two children, Noel and Grace; and one great-grandchild, Gunner. He is also survived by his brother, David Self, sister-in-law, Robin West, and a host of nieces, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Don, an all-star baseball player through high-school, had three daughters, so he learned the game of softball. He coached all three of his daughters, two of his granddaughters, and many other young girls who would later go on to become some of the best pitchers and players in the state. Some of those he coached went on to go to college with softball scholarships. He spent countless hours at the softball fields, whether it was little league, high-school, or ASA softball teams, he selflessly helped dozens of young ladies achieve their softball dreams. He is well-known in Hampton Roads for being one of, if not the best, pitching coach around. Don was a graduate of George Washington High School, Danville, VA, 1958. He holds a bachelor of Science degree in Social Work from Virginia Tech.

He was a true family man, and his wife, children, and grandchildren were the most precious people in his life. His license plate is GDAD9X, for Granddad 9 times – he has nine grandchildren. One of the most important things to him is that people come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, and he was avid about spreading the Gospel to all. He took his Heavenly Father with him in his heart everywhere he went, and he truly displayed the love of Christ to his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchild, other family members, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and even strangers.
