Peggy Jean Brinker, 82, passed away peacefully at home with her family on April 30, 2014. Peggy, originally from Staunton, Virginia moved to Norfolk in 1957 with her husband of 50 years, Jerome Charles Brinker, Sr. (“Jerry”, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) who passed before her in 2004. Together they were blessed with six (6) children, Mark Carl Brinker (deceased – 1977), Rebecca Jean Sublett (“Becky” - husband, Wayne), David Lee Brinker (deceased – 1989), Jerome Charles Brinker, Jr. (“J.C.”), Paul Vernon Brinker (wife, Donna), and Margaret Ann Heaster (“Susie”– husband, David Heaster) as well as eight (8) grandchildren, Gary Sublett (wife, Donna), Ronnie Whitehurst III (wife, Jennifer), Melissa Hoffer (husband, Joseph), Jason Brinker (Fiance’, Katie), Eric Brinker (wife, April), Kevin Brinker, Heidi Brinker and Kurtis Brinker; and ten (10) great grandchildren, Jennifer Sublett, Gary Wayne “Bubba” Sublett Jr, Ashley Whitehurst, Mark Whitehurst, Justin Whitehurst, Austin Wolda, Aiden Hoffer, Elizabeth Hoffer, Jonas Brinker, Edmund Brinker, and one on the way (Melissa Hoffer due in June); and one (1) great – great grandchild, Brayden and one on the way (Ashley Whitehurst due in August).
Born February 13, 1932 in Augusta County, Virginia to the late Lewis F. Nutty and Nellie (Murphy) Nutty, Peggy’s mother died shortly after giving birth to her and she was raised by her foster parents, Vernon and Ruby Hulvey in Staunton, Virginia. As was the nature of the times, she and her siblings were separated shortly after her birth and they all went to live with loving foster parents. Although, she did not know them, she has extended family across the country who probably share her same gentle traits of kindness, wittiness and sense of humor. She was actively involved with the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge # 38 in the Ladies Auxiliary, as well as the American Legion Post No. 204, Ladies Auxiliary.
The family will receive friends Saturday, May 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel where a celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 4 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
