

Purificacion ‘Purie’ Chagas Legara, 85, resident of Virginia Beach, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Sentara Windermere in Virginia Beach, VA. Born February 13, 1929, she was a native of Tubigon, Bohol, Philippines and was the daughter of the late Avelino Chagas and the late Marciana Lao Chagas. She was the wife of the late Julian V. Legara. Mrs. Legara acquired her Master of Arts Major in Spanish at the University of Madrid in Madrid, Spain in 1964. Purie Legara spent most of her teaching career at various colleges in the Philippines, and approximately 20 years for the Trenton, NJ Public School System until her retirement. She was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Holy Spirit Sunshine Club, a member of Cebuano Speaking Association of Tidewater (CSAT), Fil-am Bayanihan Club of the Philippine Cultural Center, and the Senior Citizens Group at Lorenzo Spiritual Center of Virginia Beach. She is survived by a son, Julius Chagas Legara of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother and sister, Jose Chagas and Monserat Chagas-Autentico both of Bohol, Philippines; and a granddaughter, Jessica Uy Legara of Virginia Beach, VA. Other than her parents and husband, she is also predeceased by a sister, Russie Chagas-Corsanes and brother, Avelino Chagas Jr. A rosary and novena will be held at the San Lorenzo Spiritual Center on Indian River Road every 7:30 pm from May 15 through May 18 and every 6:30 pm from May 19 through May 22, 2014. Family will join friends at the Woodlawn Funeral Home on Friday, May 23 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service by Fr. Leo Manalo. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Father Kuhneman officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
