William N. Mitchell Jr., 83, born in Harlem, New York and moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away on June 21, 2023, at his home in Virginia Beach. He was known as "Gee Gee" or Junior to his family and "Mitch or Mitchell" to his friends.
Mitch loved swimming and became a lifeguard during his early years and in his latter years he became a correctional officer for the Department of Corrections in Rikers Island, Queens New York. Mitch always made certain his loved ones were happy and safe by joking and laughing or preparing us one of his top notch culinary delights or protecting us in times of trouble. Occasionally just mere presence would reassure us with safety. He was fierce as a lion and gentle as a lamb. Yes, his heart was as pure as gold. He loved his family, friends, people, children and his five chow chows who were also family to him. Most importantly, he was greatly loved by those whose hearts he touched as he developed brother-like friendships wherever he went from his childhood friends, as a lifeguard, and as a correctional officer. As a man who enjoyed sports, basketball and football were his games of choice. Growing up in a family of pinochle players, it was no surprise that when he moved to Virginia, he found true friends in the members of a pinochle club. Mitch was husband, partner, best friend, father, uncle, brother, grandfather and the list goes on. Losing him is indescribable but we must find comfort in knowing he is at peace with our loved ones who have gone before him as they rest in the hands of Jesus.
Mitch is survived by his wife, Miah of Virginia Beach, two sons, Corrie, with wife Mary Clare of New Jersey, Frank, wife Jimin of New York and one daughter, Le'Chan "Chanee" of Virginia Beach, his former wife Brenda of Pennsylvania, his sister Ann of Connecticut, his niece and nephews Joey of Connecticut, Dawn, "Dawny" of Maryland.
