It is with a profound sense of loss and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Jon Sieck, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Jon, 84, died peacefully of bladder cancer on November 17, 2023, having beaten it 5 years earlier.
Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Jon graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he was a varsity swimmer and a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. It was during these years that he met his future wife, Barbara, with whom he shared 63 years of unwavering love and devotion.
Jon and Barbara fondly spoke of carving their initials into a booth of the original Smokey Joe's in Philadelphia, a gesture that mirrored the endurance of their union. Together, they raised three children—Abby, Bill, and David—and built a family that now spans generations, including grandchildren and great-granddaughters who brought so much joy to Jon's life.
Jon's passions were diverse. An expert skier and tennis player, he approached life with an adventurous spirit. He greatly enjoyed his time spent at the Merion Cricket Club and the local Mercedes club. His knowledge and enthusiasm for obsolete car parts and antique toy trains made him a sought-after buyer and seller in these communities. He loved to read, laughing out loud at a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip then discussing Plato with friends at the dog park.
Jon loved his annual trips to Canada, skiing and smoking cigars with his uncle Bob and Penn roommate Evert. A broken leg one year only increased his desire to get back to the slopes.
Jon's early professional career in banking and insurance had him dressed in a 3-piece Brooks Brothers suit during the week, then a pair of old jeans at his vintage car parts warehouse on the weekends. Yet, it was his and Barbara’s legendary Christmas parties that truly captured the spirit of the season.
Upon moving to Virginia Beach in 2013, Jon continued to enrich the lives of those around him. He volunteered at the Norfolk Animal Care Center, and at home, he cared for and fostered feral kittens.
During the final years of his life, Jon cared for and supported his wife Barbara as her Alzheimer’s disease progressed. In the spirit of giving, Jon wished for donations to be
made to the Alzheimer's Association and American Cancer Society, causes close to his heart.
Jon is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara, his daughter Abby Sweeney (and her husband Kevin), son Bill (and his wife Katherine), son David, grandsons Kevin (and his wife Chrissy), Colin, and Christian (and fiancé Caroline), and great granddaughters, Lucy and Charlotte, and his sister Sally. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the memories he created, and the love that continues to resonate through the generations.
Rest in peace Dad!
