Billy Joe Mays of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away on November 23rd in Norman. He was born on May 12, 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Donald Lee Mays and Patsy (Huse). Billy spent his early years in Missouri, but after graduating from high school, made his way to Oklahoma for a career in the oilfield, where he found work at the Hendershot Tool Company. Upon the news that he was expecting his first child, Billy sought out a career with more flexibility, and this landed him at The University of Oklahoma, working in the department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.
Billy dedicated three decades to honing his craft in the machine shop and mentoring students from all walks of life. Known for his skill, patience, and willingness to help, he took great pride in supporting both student and faculty projects, and his work touched countless lives on campus.
On May 18, 1990, Billy married Lisa, and although their marriage ended in 2018, they shared many years together and she remains an important part of his story. Billy later shared his life with his girlfriend, Ellen McKenzie, who brought him joy and companionship.
Billy was a man of many interests and talents. He loved all types of music and found happiness in off-roading, boating, tinkering with “man toys” like cars and boats, and, when he was younger, scuba diving. He enjoyed construction projects and took pride in building and creating. More than anything, Billy loved raising his two boys and spending time outdoors. He approached life with the heart of a strong but loving Christian man, and he taught those around him the value of determination, faith, and kindness.
He cherished his family and friends, embraced every challenge, and valued the comfort of a loving partner. His lifelong friendships with Greg Williams and Tim Whitney were especially meaningful to him.
Billy is survived by his sons, Mason Mays of Norman, Oklahoma, and Morgan Mays of Atlanta, Georgia; his siblings, Sheila VanBuskirk and her spouse Jim Evans, Rick Mays and his spouse Deb Mays, Ron Mays, Ronie Mays, David Mays, and Rob Mays; his girlfriend, Ellen McKenzie; and many other beloved family members and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Billy’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 26th at 10:00 a.m. at Primrose Funeral Service Chapel, with family officiating.
