Leona was born to Ida (Beller) and Warner L. Sorrels on April 27, 1943 in Denver, Colorado.
Leona lived a life defined by her passion for Art, learning, her love of animals, and her unwavering devotion to her family.
She graduated from Phillips University before earning her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Oklahoma. Leona became a Medical Librarian for Integris Health in Oklahoma City. She was a lifelong learner and dedicated professional who inspired those around her with her intellect and curiosity.
Leona married the love of her life, Darrel Ray Porter, and together they built a beautiful life, sharing over 26 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
A true animal lover, Leona’s home was always a haven for pets, and she could often be found on the front porch feeding her rescue horses, chickens, cats and dogs. Her kind heart, sharp sense of humor, and warm spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
She was a long time member of First Christian Church of Norman.
Leona’s legacy will live on through her family and friends, who will remember her for her humor, compassion, and the warmth she brought into every room. She is survived by her Husband, Darrel Ray Porter, her children: Elizabeth Pettit Hocker and spouse Evan Hocker, Thomas Bertlyn Pettit and spouse Scarlet Pettit, and Catharine Ann Moses and spouse Steve Moses. She is also survived by her stepchildren: Robert and Sheri Pettit, John and Shell Porter, Mike and Shelly Root, and Zach and Christina Porter. Her legacy of love continues through her cherished grandchildren: Zoe Ruth Hocker, Mia Grace Hocker, William Monroe Pettit, Lauren Ann Moses, and Michael Martin Moses who brought her endless joy and pride.
She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A graveside service for Leona will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Wanette Cemetery, Wanette, OK 74878.
