

Dr. Mehran Shahsavari, M.D., a devoted physician and compassionate caregiver, passed away on January 15, 2026, in Norman, Oklahoma. He was born on June 24, 1965, in Iran, to Hossein Shahsavari and Maman Shahsavari.
Dr. Shahsavari dedicated his life to the practice of medicine and to the care of his patients and family, whom he loved deeply. He wished to be remembered foremost as a devoted doctor—a calling he fulfilled with integrity, excellence, and unwavering commitment throughout his career.
Born and educated in Iran, Dr. Shahsavari earned his Doctorate and began a distinguished medical journey that ultimately brought him to the United States in 1996. He lived and trained in Virginia, Michigan, and Ohio before making Oklahoma his permanent home in 2000. In Norman, he became a cornerstone of the medical community, widely respected for his clinical expertise, leadership, and deep compassion for those he served.
Dr. Shahsavari began his medical career with a Rotating Internship at Tehran University Hospitals in October 1989. In April 1991, he became a Staff Physician at the Tehran Blood Institute. From July 1991 to January 1994, he served as an Emergency Room Physician at the 501 Tehran Army Hospital and Day General Hospital. In January 1994, he was appointed Medical Director of the Contagious Diseases Prevention Section, and in January 1995, he also assumed leadership of the Urgent Care Clinic and Emergency Room at the Nahavand Health Center. In December 1995, Dr. Shahsavari became a Primary Care Physician at the Galen Medical Complex.
During his medical career in Iran, he earned several honors and awards, including the Honor of Appreciation at the 501 Tehran Army Hospital in June 1992, the Award of Leadership with the Deputy of Health, Hamedan Province/WHO in July 1992, and the Dean’s Award for Achievements in Medical Practice and Leadership at Hamedan University in June 1995.
In September 1996, Dr. Shahsavari relocated to the United States, where he became an Observing Physician at the Thomas Clinic of Allergy and Immunization in Richmond, Virginia. In August 1997, he moved to Southfield, Michigan, to serve as an Extern in the Internal Medicine Department at Providence Hospital. While continuing his work as an Extern, he also began a position as a Research Assistant in the Cardiology Department at Wayne State University/VAMC in Detroit, Michigan, in June 1997.
In June 1998, Dr. Shahsavari moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he began his training as an Internal Medicine Intern at Case Western Reserve University MetroHealth Medical Center. He later advanced to Internal Medicine Resident, a role he held until June 2001.
In June 2001, Dr. Shahsavari made his final move to Oklahoma, where he founded his own practice, Norman Internal Medicine, P.C. In September 2002, he became a Hospitalist at Norman Regional Hospital. In September 2004, he was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, later advancing to Clinical Associate Professor in July 2010.
Dr. Shahsavari served as Medical Director of Norman Specialty Hospital from December 2007 until December 2009. Beginning in January 2010, he became Chief of Medical Staff at Norman Specialty Hospital, a position he held until July 2016. He also served as Chairman of the Department of Hospital Medicine at Norman Regional Hospital until December 2018, after which he became Vice Chairman of the Department of Hospital Medicine in January of the following year. In August 2017, Dr. Shahsavari assumed the role of Rehabilitation Unit Medical Consultant and Hospitalist at Norman Regional Hospital in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit.
In December 2000, Dr. Shahsavari obtained his Oklahoma State Medical License, and in October 2001, he became certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was an active member of numerous professional organizations, including Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and member of the Oklahoma State Medical Association.
He married the love of his life, Amy Hathorn, on August 15, 2018, in Norman, Oklahoma.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Shahsavari enjoyed cooking, listening to music by Adele, Taylor Swift, and Keith Urban, and staying engaged with the world by watching CNN. These simple pleasures brought him joy amid a life devoted to service.
He is survived by his wife, Amy; his stepchildren, Abigail Bass and Isabella Bass; seven siblings; numerous nieces and nephews; his in-laws, Susan and Terry Hathorn, and Laura Taylor, his office manager of 22 years, who stood beside him through decades of service and leadership. He was preceded in death by his parents, two siblings, and one niece.
Dr. Mehran Shahsavari leaves behind a profound legacy of healing, leadership, and compassion. His impact on his patients, colleagues, students, and loved ones will be remembered with deep gratitude and respect.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Primrose Funeral Service, located at 3901 N Flood Ave., Norman, OK, 73069, United States. The service is scheduled for Friday, January 30, 2026, at 10:00 am.
