Tommy Edward Varner, known lovingly as Tom, passed away on May, 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, warmth, and unwavering devotion to family, friends, and the Oklahoma Sooners. He was born on June 11, 1943, in Talala, Oklahoma, to Cecil Richard Varner and Mildred Margaret Horner.
A proud Oklahoman, Tom grew up in Chandler, where he graduated from Chandler High School in 1963. He went on to earn his degree from Okmulgee Tech in 1965. Tom lived in Oklahoma his entire life—spending many years in Chandler and Oklahoma City before making Norman his home in 2011.
Tom dedicated many years of service to the Oklahoma Medical Center, working in the Lab Transport Section. He also found great joy and pride in his longtime role as a softball umpire for the Amateur Softball Association. Beginning in 1986, Tom officiated countless games, and in 1995, he was honored as “Umpire of the Year.” He continued to serve the sport until his retirement from umpiring in 2019.
Known for his perseverance, Tom faced adversity with quiet strength and a sense of humor. After losing his arm, he refused to let the challenge define him. Instead, he adapted and thrived—becoming a powerful example of resilience, determination, and hope. Through his actions, Tom showed those around him that no obstacle is too great to overcome.
Tom had a love for the simple joys in life—Johnny Cash’s music, the color red, and the excitement of an OU football or softball game. He was an avid walker, often covering 15 miles a day, believing firmly in the value of staying active. He especially cherished family gatherings and attending sporting events. His laugh came easily—especially at a good, silly dad joke—and his conversations could warm the hearts of strangers and friends alike.
Above all, Tom wanted to be remembered as a loyal husband, a nurturing and loving father, a hard worker, and a die-hard OU fan. He was a man who believed in connecting with others, walking every day, and living with passion.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Linda Varner, whom he married on July 2, 1970; his daughter, Amy Varner Fleming, of Fairview, Texas; and his sister, Janie Varner VanDeGrift of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his brothers Carl James Varner, Jack Stewart, and Jessie Stewart. Tom also leaves behind five nieces, three nephews, and countless friends who were touched by his life and spirit.
His family will forever carry with them the lessons he taught—especially the truth that life’s challenges are meant to be faced with grit, grace, and an open heart.
A celebration of life for Tom will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071.
