Vernon Y. Swafford was born Christmas Day, 1928 in Poteau, Oklahoma to M.R. and Gladys Swafford, and died May 30, 2013 in Norman, OK. He was an employee of OG&E for almost 40 years; at his retirement he was the District Manager of the Norman District. Vernon was a proud graduate of Capitol Hill High School and Oklahoma City University and was also a member of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1950 to 1952. An avid golfer, he spent many a Saturday morning teeing off at the absolute first crack of light with his buddies, laughing and joking through each and every round.
He is survived by a sister, Carolyn Davis, a brother, Mike Swafford, one son, David Swafford and his wife, Mary; five grandchildren, Christina Davis and her husband Michael, Susan Long, Pamela Long, Shannon Pawley and her husband, Travis, Sally Mitzner and her husband, Matt; and three great-grandchildren, Miranda Davis, Knox Pawley, and Duke Mitzner.
Vernon was married to Wanda Swafford for fifty-six glorious years, loving every minute of the time spent with each other and family and friends. Wanda preceded Vernon in death in 2010. A daughter, Karen Long also predeceased him. Vernon was a stranger to no one, a friend to many, and he always possessed a kind and gentle soul. It can be said of him, all that knew him, loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bridges of Norman, Inc., 1670 N. Stubbeman, Norman, OK 73069.
A memorial service will be officiated by David Spain at First Christian Church of Norman at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Services are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service.
