

Charles Lawrence Tavelle, 90, of North Charleston, passed away Monday, September 3, 2018. He was surrounded by his family. He was born December 31, 1927 in Charleston, to the late Charles M. and Clara Tisdell Tavelle.
In addition to his parents Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Lavene “Sandy” Tavelle, and a son, Charles Lawrence Tavelle.
He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Korea where he was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during a mortar attack in which he led his troops to safety. Under fire and in a blazing fire, he went back alone to bring three wounded soldiers to safety. After his service in the military, he spent his career as a Project Director over Project Engineering at Garco / RM Industrials in N. Charleston. After retirement, he opened his own business to continue his passion as a tool and die expert machinist.
Charles enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, bowling, playing cards and working as a machinist in his business. He was a great husband, father and grandfather. His care for animals was far above and beyond. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his dog and companion, “Missy”, a daughter, Sally Taylor, a son, Jeff (Kelly B.) Tavelle, and a daughter, Jeannie (Bruce) Golden, his grandchildren, Madeline Jackson, James, Tyler, Tabitha Lavene, Charles (Latasha) Tavelle III, and Tera (William) Quin, and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 7:00 pm at the Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7713 Rivers Avenue, in North Charleston. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to; the Wounded Warriors Project and Charleston County Animal Society.
