

David Gene McGinnis, Sr., 91, of North Charleston, S.C. departed this life to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on April 3, 2017 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Family and friends of Gene McGinnis are invited to attend his funeral services on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends at 12 pm, with the funeral service at 1 pm and burial to follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Gene was born October 14, 1925 in Bryson City, NC, the youngest of 13 children of the late Floyd Hughes and Lenora Bailey Hughes. Gene left school early and joined the US Navy in April 1942 as part of the Greatest Generation and fought in World War II. He was part of combat operations in the Asia Pacific area, the American Area, the European-Africa area and Philippine Liberation Campaign and participated in four different invasions during these operations. In November 1947, he received an Honorable Discharge from the US Navy and worked as a railroad brakeman, a fire fighter, and then pursued a career as a plumber-pipe fitter. He is survived by his wife of over 71 years: Phoebe Holshouser McGinnis; son: David (Linda) McGinnis of Hanahan, SC; grandsons: Michael (Emily) McGinnis of Goose Creek, SC; and Steven (Melody) McGinnis of North Charleston, SC; and six great-grandchildren: Addie, Ian, and Elliot McGinnis of Goose Creek, SC and Peyton, Delaney and Macey McGinnis of North Charleston, SC.
