

Edith worked for Belk Department stores as a window and store display designer for many years. She and her husband were owners of Berkeley Gulf Service Station and Wrecker service in Hanahan, SC working side by side for 20 years.
Edith was a loving and devoted wife to her late husband, Vernon, for over 68 years. She loved her family and was known to her 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many others as "Mama Edie."
Edith is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Ashley and son-in-law, Gene, of Summerville, SC; her son, Michael Black and daughter-in-law, Sheila, of Summerville, SC; Susan Black and daughter-in-law of Hanhan, SC; and her sister Tammy Cobb of Summerville, SC.
Edith is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Vernon H Black; a loving son, John V Black; her parents John Skipper and Nellie Sellers Skipper; her brothers Roger, John, and James Skipper; and sister Willie Mae Helms.
She was a faithful Member and worker of New Covenant Church of God in Summerville, SC for many years. During her years of retirement, she traveled with Vernon anywhere he wanted to go. They crossed the country many times visiting each state at least once and Alaska many times. Their travels took them to Mexico, South America, Hawaii, England, and Canada. One of Edith's great passions was her backyard garden that she loved working in and took great pride in. No matter what the season, her garden was always full of life, colors, and beautiful flowers, she definitely had a green thumb! Edith was also an avid crafter and very talented artist, she loved sitting on the seashore, by the river and the many gardens in Charleston and painting the beautiful scenery.
Edith will be greatly missed, but her memory will live on through the many crafts, quilts, and paintings she has gifted to her family and friends. Go sit on those Heavenly shores and paint your ultimate masterpiece!
A visitation will be held Friday, January 23, 2026, from 11:00am to 12:00pm at New Covenant Church of God, 304 S. Pine Street, Summerville, SC 29483. A memorial service will follow from 12:00 to 1:00pm. The entombment will follow at 1:30pm at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406.
The family would like to thank The Blake in Summerville, SC for embracing and loving on Mom these last few months and for showing her how much fun Bingo could be. We would also like to thank the Nurses and Doctors at Roper Berkeley, at Carnes and Hospice for taking such loving care during the last several weeks. The compassion shown made her final days more comfortable and peaceful.
