

Frances Kirkland Hughes went to be with the Lord on the morning of September 4, 2024. Frances K. Hughes is survived by her devoted husband, Leon Hughes, Jr., and just celebrated sixty-four years of marriage on July 27, 2024. Residence, Oak Island, Charleston, SC. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial service in celebration of her eighty-two years of life on Saturday, September 28 at 12:00 PM (Noon), at the Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina, 29403. Interment, Sunday, September 29, at 1:00 pm at Carolina Funeral Home & Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave, North Charleston, South Carolina, 29406.
Frances was born on November 4, 1941, in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of the late George L. Kirkland and Thelma Tumbleston Kirkland. She was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church and was involved in various ministries within the church to include Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Frances was a selfless and kind person who put God first, took care of her family, and always supported her friends. Frances was a musician playing the organ and the piano at the Baptist and Presbyterian churches to which she belonged in her lifetime. For many years, she worked as a medical practice manager for groups of esteemed surgeons and specialists. She also worked at MUSC for the neurology department and as a compliance officer. She was well-respected in the medical community for her outstanding administrative and leadership skills.
She was the beloved mother, to a daughter Roseanne Hughes Gutmann and her husband Werner Gutmann, their children Michael Lawrence Fox, Eva Manzo, William Gutmann, and two step grandsons Felix Gutmann and Lucas Gutmann. She was also the beloved mother to her son Leon Hughes, III and wife Kerrie Frances Hughes, and their children, Shelby and Aaron Trotter, Sydney and Trenton Maybury, and Madison Giddings and Hunter Giddings. She also had eight great grandchildren, Luna Grace Fox, Sol Michael Fox, Robert Trotter, Olivia Trotter, Benjamin Trotter, Emma Maybury, Dylan Maybury, and Alexander Maybury. Frances is also survived by her three nieces and spouses, Cheryl L. Magill, Monte L. Jacques and husband Roy, and Debbie L. Doscher and husband Johnny.
