James (Jim) G. Dickinson Sr. went home to his Father on April 29, 2019 at 5:02 am. He leaves behind his Darling wife of 56 years, Dianne G. Dickinson, his son James G. Dickinson Jr., Daughter Andrea L. Dickinson, Grandson Andrew J. Dickinson, and his much beloved sister, Terrie S. Prichard. In addition to his immediate family he leaves his beloved mother of marriage, Berdie A. Graves. He also leaves behind his sisters by marriage, Andrea Hiott, Jeanette Morrow, Millie Padgett, and Jackie Maggio and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Jim was born and grew up in Camden, NJ until he made the United States Navy his chosen profession. He served proudly from 1960 to 1980. Having caught the wanderlust, after retirement from the Navy, Jim and his family moved to Slidell, LA. While in Louisiana, he became an active member in the American Dart Organization, mentoring young people in his love of darts. Papa smurf, as he was known by his dart friends, always had a joke to share and hand to lend.
After leaving Louisiana, Jim and his wife moved to Aiken, SC. This move was to fulfill his promise to his darling wife that upon retirement, he would settle in South Carolina. He did not retire, but instead worked for the Savannah River Site. Again, his love of darts and people led him to become involved in the darting organization of the area. While in Aiken, the opportunity to move to Egypt and work presented itself and Jim and Dianne could not wait for a new adventure and to meet new friends and see more of the world. He and his wife later moved to Summerville, SC, where he only sort of retired as the man could not be still unless he was sleeping. Here Jim found his way to a veteran’s group at Cathedral of Praise, dedicated to helping homeless veterans get back on their feet.
Jim was a gregarious people person. He did not go out on any given day and not make a new friend. For his family and friends left behind this little story of his life is small in comparison to the larger than life man. We will miss him but Thank God that we had the privilege of having him for such a long, happy, messy, laugh filled life.
Jim will be sent to rest on May 9, 2019 at 7:30 am, mostly because the man could not sleep past 5:30 am in the morning, from the fantail of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Veteran’s Locker at Cathedral of Praise, in North Charleston or any veterans organization of your choice.
