Marta Miriam Rivera McCray, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2025. Born in Panama City, Panama on June 27, 1934, she was the cherished daughter of the late Juan Rivera and Vicenta Dominguez De Rivera.
Marta’s life was a beautiful reflection of compassion, devotion, and inspiration. Her warm heart, radiant smile, and kind spirit touched all who had the joy of knowing her.
She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Marta is survived by her daughters, Desiree Proudfit (Curtis) and Annie McCray; and by her loving grandchildren: Jennifer Goins, Melissa Hanley (Billy), John McDonald, Caitlin Norfleet, and Avis Norfleet. Marta also leaves behind a legacy of love through her great-grandchildren: Deija, Krista, Hayley, Hannah, Tori, Ethan, Kensie, and Caleb Goins; and Mickey and Emmersyn Hanley.
Marta held dear the bonds of friendship and considered Ramon Hernandez, along with Margaret and Arturo Moreno, to be family in every sense of the word.
She now rejoins her beloved husband, Calvin “Mack” McCray, in eternal rest, along with her parents, her daughters Marti Norfleet and Jean McDonald, and her brother Juan A. Rivera.
Faith played a central role in Marta’s life, and she was a dedicated member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Her creativity and passions brought joy to those around her—whether through her beautiful paintings of beach and mountain landscapes, delicate cross-stitching, her love of dancing, or the warmth of her home-cooked meals.
Marta will be remembered not only for her many talents but for the love she shared so freely, the inspiration she offered so generously, and the strength with which she lived her life.
A gathering to celebrate Marta’s life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Carolina Funeral Home, located at 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406.
