

Mrs. Mattie Watson Legare was born on December 16, 1958, on James Island, SC. She was the daughter of Ms. Jannie Swinton and the late Mr. Morris Carter, Sr. She fell asleep in death on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Mr. Raymond Henry Legare, her brother Maurice Carter and brother-in-law Martin Bond.
Mattie graduated from James Island High School in 1976. She graduated from Benedict College in 1980 where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Economics/Business Administration, then on to get a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. She pursued her passion of working with and aiding the youth through her career with Rural Mission Migrant Head Start as an Education Coordinator for 24 years while also serving over 16 years in the United States Air Force Reserve. On August 2, 2014, she became a baptized Jehovah’s Witness.
Mattie met and married the love of her life Raymond H. Legare on December 14, 2002. This loving marriage was blessed with 4 sons. Mattie was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt. Mattie shared her love of Jehovah with everyone and she loved being with her family and friends. She enjoyed shopping, loving on her grandchildren, and nurturing other youths. She had a very special and devoted companion named CoCo Michelle whom she loved dearly and unconditionally.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: Her Mother Jannie Swinton of James Island, SC, and stepmother Claudette Carter of New York, NY. Children; her loving son Ija Watson (+1) of Atlanta, GA; Rashawn (+1) Legare of Marietta, GA; Lanard (+1) and Ryan (+1) Legare both of Jacksonville, FL. Grandchildren; Mikell, Demetrius, Dominique, Jeffery, Deveron, Zhian, and Jaevon. Sisters; Marsha (+1) Robinson, Angel (+1) Ragland both of James Island, SC, Crystal Carter-Bond, Marcia and Amber Carter and sister-in-law Yolanda Carter all of New York, NY. Sisters-in-law; Rosalee Bryan of Charleston, SC, Leithea Brown of N. Charleston, SC, Barbara Legare and Madlyn (+1) Smith both of Johns Island, SC. Brothers; Larry (+1) Jenkins, Reginald Jenkins, and Marvin (+1) Watson all of James Island, SC, Darren, and Scott Carter both of New York, NY; brothers-in-law; Fred (+1) and Nathaniel (+1) Legare both of Johns Island, SC.
