

Ruby Elizabeth Gunter Mangum Ruby Elizabeth Gunter Mangum, 93, passed away on December 26, 2016 after a short illness. Ruby was born in Aiken, SC on January 24, 1923 to Camilla Kennedy Gunter and Elliott B Gunter. After graduating from Aiken High School in June l939, Ruby moved to Charleston, SC to start a career. She worked at the US Army Finance Center in Charleston during WWII, where she met and married Edwin W Mangum, Sr. on July 22, 1944. While raising seven children, she continued her career and retired after 28 years as office manager at Belk Department Store in North Charleston. Ruby loved to travel and visited 48 states and several countries. She was very involved with her church and until her death, was the oldest living active member. She sang in the church choir for over 30 years and volunteered at a local nursing home for over 10 years. In addition to staying busy with her large family, she also loved to walk and read. Ruby cherished her family, always looking forward to annual gatherings, and loved her church family as well as her special friends and neighbors. Ruby Mangum is survived by her sons: Edwin W. Mangum, Jr., Russell T. (Carole) Mangum, R. Anthony “Tony” Mangum, Barry L. Mangum, and Daniel “Danny” S. (Sandy) Mangum, daughters: Elizabeth M. “Beth” Griffeth and Janet M. Cooper-Tanner (Sam), as well as a special “daughter and son-in-law” Marlys and Burge Hildreth. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way. In addition to her parents, Ruby is pre-deceased by her husband Ed, a sister: Christine Caprell, two brothers: Roy Gunter and Richard Gunter, a grandson: Brian Cooper, a son-in-law: Charles Griffeth, a daughter-in-law: Kathi Mangum, and several half brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 pm Thursday, Dec. 29 at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave, N. Chas, and funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday, Dec. 30 at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 4990 Dorchester Rd., N. Chas., 29418. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
