

Ruth Hysmith Lipscomb, 96, widow of Dewey B. Lipscomb entered into eternal rest on May 27th 2026. She was born on July 17th 1929 in Charleston to Clarence Hysmith and Wilhelmena Holseberg Hysmith. She is survived by a daughter, Lynda Scarborough of Summerville, SC; two grandchildren, Liz Rennie (K.C.) of North Charleston, SC and Daniel Scarborough (Niki) of Lake City, SC; five grandchildren, Callum Rennie, Ruthie Rennie, Braxton Knight, Brayden Knight, and Bowden Scarborough; nieces Carol Jones (Bob) of North Charleston, SC Cyndi Waters (Jack) of Spartanburg, SC, Pam Krum (Greg) of Chattanooga, TN, and a nephew Stan Gunselman (Janis) of Franklin, TN. She was predeceased by her sister, Doris Conner.
Ruth was a graduate of North Charleston High School, class of 1946. She and D.B. established homes in Coronado, CA, Norfolk, VA, Trinidad, and Patuxent River, MD during his Navy career, retiring in Charleston in 1961. She then resumed her Civil Service career at the Navy Finance Office and at the Naval Investigative Service.
Upon retirement, she spent quality time with her family, especially enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruth was an active member of Summerville Baptist Church and in later years she enjoyed watching Sunday services online. For the past three years, she had lived at The Claiborne at Brickyard Crossing, where she made many friends and was an accomplished Rummikub player. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Ruth exemplified the best of The Greatest Generation.
A graveside service will be held at Carolina Memorial Gardens on Sunday, May 31st, 2026 at 1:00 pm. Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to The Lowcountry Food Bank @lowcountryfoodbank.org 2864 Azalea Dr., North Charleston, SC 29405.
