June 17, 1924 – May 6, 2018
Edwin “Eddie” Goldner passed away May 6, 2018 at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was born June 17, 1924 in the Bronx, New York to the late Sadie Sharin and the late Harry Goldner.
He attended Samuel Gompers Industrial High School for Boys where he was known as “One Man Tank Goldner” and spent his free time working as a ticket taker at Yankee Stadium.
Goldner served in World War II in the United States Army Air Forces from 1942 – 1945 as a ball turret gunner in a B-24 bomber. After the war, he worked as a professional electrician, and was a 60-year member of IBEW Union Local 3. He served as electrical foreman on many major construction projects in New York City including the Ravenswood Power Plant commonly known as “Big Allis”.
He met his wife, the late Gloria Goldner (nee Kleinman), while he was working on an electrical project in her office building. He was up on a ladder and noticed her working down below. Goldner offered to accompany her home from work on the subway. They were married shortly afterwards on November 3, 1947.
Together they lived in the Fresh Meadows neighborhood of Queens, NY where they had two sons Ronald Goldner and the late Howard Goldner. Goldner enjoyed amateur wine-making, and served as the Cub Master of the largest Cub Scout pack in New York City in the 1960s. He then went on to become Scout Master.
After retiring, he lived for 39 years in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he was active in the Township Neighborhood Association and was known to his grandchildren as “Grandpa Eddie Spaghetti”. During his time in Florida, he ran his own business designing and installing domed ceilings and fans. He was also an avid tennis player, and continued to play three times per week until the age of 89.
Goldner loved gardening and caring for his orchids, fishing, and hand-crafting custom furniture which included a trio of grandfather clocks, and a dollhouse for his granddaughter that was an exact replica of his own home in Coconut Creek, Fl. A true “Mr Fix-it”, he passed along many of his skills to his sons along with a plethora of tools.
In addition to his beloved wife of 58 years, Goldner is preceded in death by his son Howard Goldner, and siblings Norman Goldner (Dorothy) and Harriett Goldner.
He is survived by his son Ronald Goldner (Arlene) of Memphis, TN; daughter-in-law Lois Goldner of Lake Worth, FL; grandchildren Jason Goldner of Schnectady, NY, Josh Goldner (Laurie) of Commack, NY, Melissa Bloomfield (Jason) of Atlanta, GA, and Justin Goldner (Shana) of South Orange, NJ; along with eight great-grandchildren, Alexander, Grady and Luann Goldner, Sabrina and Julie Goldner, Mollie and Clara Bloomfield, and Everett Goldner.
