March 3, 1931 – November 4, 2024
Frances Shapiro, cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, at the age of 93. Born in the Bronx, New York, to Rose and Herman Siegel, Fran grew up in Union City, New Jersey, and graduated from Union Hill High School.
On February 12, 1949, Fran married her beloved husband, Bernie Shapiro. Together, they built a life filled with love and adventure, raising three children—Michael, Laurie, and David. Over the years, Fran and Bernie made their homes in several places, from a second-floor walk-up in Union City, to a 2 bedroom apartment in Jersey City, to a ranch house in Staten Island, to a larger house in Kendall Park, New Jersey, before finally settling in Tamarac, Florida. Fran loved her new life in Florida, where she enjoyed being near family and making new memories.
Fran had a vibrant career as an executive secretary, working for an attorney and an architect, and she made lasting friendships through her involvement in local bowling leagues, tennis, and Mah Jong. However, her greatest joy was reading; you could always find her with a book or magazine in hand.
Fran’s life was deeply intertwined with her family. After Bernie’s passing in 2007, she faced the challenge of living alone but found comfort in her children and grandson. Fran was a proud grandmother to Kyle, David and Veroniques' son, and she became close to Sharon, Michael’s partner of 25 years.
Predeceased by her husband Bernie, her parents Rose and Herman Siegel, her brother Morris Siegel, and his wife Eleanor, as well as her son-in-law Clayton Deaner. Fran is survived by her children Michael, Laurie, and David, her daughter-in-law Veronique, her beloved grandson Kyle, and her sister-in-law Beryl. She is also remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Fran lived a full and remarkable life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of family and friends. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service for Frances will be held Monday, December 2, 2024 from 2:45 PM to 3:15 PM at Star of David Memorial Chapel, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068.
