Gladys was born May 17, 1921, in Brooklyn NY. to Charles and Sarah Dobbin. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn, N.Y. with High Honors.
At the age of 19, she married Harry M. Eisner, her husband of 70 years. He proposed to her at Bear Mountain Inn in upstate New York. In 1942 Gladys became a war bride in Chicago where Harry was stationed during WWII.
At the age of 22, Gladys lost her own mother to illness, followed by her 19 year brother Jerry in the Battle of the Bulge, within weeks of each other. Those events had a major impact on the rest of her life
Gladys worked in the loan department of Metropolitan Life Company, and became a full-time mother after her children arrived. The family lived in Far Rockaway, NY until Gladys and Harry built their dream house and moved to Roslyn, L,I, where they raised their two children. When Harry retired in 1981, they moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where they eventually built their retirement home.
Gladys took up golf in order to share it with Harry, but became committed to it herself. She even hit a hole in one on her birthday! She and Harry travelled the world and drove throughout the US many times, and the rich and colorful stories of those travels and their life together are a precious gift left to their family forever.
Gladys was an accomplished pianist, once performing in a recital at Carnegie Hall. Always interested in intellectual stimulation, in her early eighties, Gladys began to use computers. She would correspond with her family by email and use Skype with ease. She even learned to text on her mobile phone in order to stay in touch with her grandchildren. She printed her own greeting cards on the computer to the amazement of her family and friends. Gladys also was an enthusiastic Bridge player and an avid reader. She was a member of B’nai Brith and a supporter of Brandeis University. She and Harry were supporters of schools wherever they lived, and always voted for education-related bonds and levies, even in later life.
Gladys is survived by her two children, Jerry and Susan, son-in-law Matthew Saidel, and daughter-in-law Marilyn, followed by five grandchildren; Rivka, Chas, Avram, Jessa and Tova. Recently, by the grace of modern technology, she was able to see her first great-grandchild, Viggo Lever, born in Denmark. Gladys was also very fortunate recently to personally witness the engagement of her youngest granddaughter, Jessa Saidel. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, teaching the values of life and the traditions that she held dear, through her amazing stories and adventures.
Mom's intelligence, humor and love have guided us all our lives. She now joins Dad in loving embrace. We will hold her in our hearts forever.
