

Jerry Frederick “JZ” Gilbert passed away on February 4, 2016, in the arms of his loving companion, Susan D. Cornell, at his home in Coral Springs, FL. His eight year battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) ended much like he lived his life, with grace and dignity. Jerry was born on November 1938 in Charleston, WV, to parents Clifford Melton and Ruby Holley Gilbert, who both preceded him in death. During his life he served in the Air Force as a Morse Code Intercept Operator in Scotland, worked for National Airlines in reservations at Miami International Airport and with the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller at Miami Center, Miami, FL. Those life experiences sparked his love of traveling the world, which became a central part of his life. Jerry is survived by his companion of twenty years, Susan D. Cornell, whom he always referred to as the ‘Love of My Life’, step children Tony and Debbie Cernuto, step grand-daughter Alex Cernuto and numerous family members and friends. In keeping with Jerry’s wishes, he will be cremated and laid to rest at: Star of David Memorial Gardens and Cemetery 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068 on April 2, 2016 at 11:30 am. A celebration of Life Memorial Service will commence immediately following the inurnment at Star of David Funeral Chapel. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lou Gehrig’s Foundation through the ALS Foundation.
