Born on March 28, 1928, in Newark, New Jersey. A child prodigy, Lois began pursuing music at an early age. At just 16, she traveled daily to New York City to attend the Mannes School of Music. At 20, she earned a full scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music, where she graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Lois was an accomplished high soprano vocalist—more than a singer, she was also an actress and comedian. Her career spanned every corner of entertainment, from summer stock to nightclubs, from concert halls to New York City’s famed Radio City Music Hall. She appeared on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun, Annie, and several other productions, thrilling audiences with her gorgeous voice. In 1983, she performed the National Anthem at the Miami Dolphins vs. New England Patriots playoff game before 80,000 people, earning widespread acclaim and glowing reviews.
After settling in Florida in 1973, she continued to perform while also owning and operating a clothing boutique, Frocks and Frills. She was an active member of the Morning Musicale of Fort Lauderdale, where she served as acting president for five consecutive years, and for a decade she delighted audiences as part of The Golden Girls of Music and Comedy, a musical variety show staged throughout Miami Beach. She was also Miss Irvington, a finalist in the Miss New Jersey pageant in 1949.
In 1975, Lois met the love of her life, Larry Silver, and instantly became a mother to five children. She often shared her cherished words: “Thou not flesh of my flesh, but don’t ever forget, you are not born under my heart, but in it.”
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Silver; her sons, Craig Silver and Scott Silver; and her granddaughter, Nicole Silver. She is survived by her daughters, Kim Glusky (Harry), Tracey Silver-Charan (Jay), and Alison Theriot (Jason); grandchildren, Joseph and Chelsea Glusky; great-granddaughter, Jayden Kirk; her brother, Ronald Ochner; niece, Cheryl Ditaranto; and nephews, Rick Ochner and Christopher Ochner.
Lois was an extraordinary woman, a devoted wife, and a loving mother. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. May her soul be free and at peace. In addition to her love of music and the arts, Lois was a passionate animal advocate and lifelong lover of dogs.
