Marjorie Mae Hurlston Banks, 86, of Sunrise, Florida departed this life and fell asleep in Jesus on April 9, 2025. She awaits the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and the resurrection when the dead in Christ shall rise.
Marjorie was born on August 19, 1938, in La Ceiba, Honduras to the late James Hurlston and Iramae Crimmins Hurlston. She was raised in West End, Roatan, The Bay Islands of Honduras. She was educated in “Spanish School” and went to “English School” a term used to refer to being educated in the British system and achieving the equivalent to a High School Diploma today.
Marjorie was born into a Seventh-Day Adventist family and was baptized at the age of 13 in 1951. She had a deep love for the Lord and remained a devoted Christian throughout her life. Her family was her greatest treasure; she would do anything to ensure their well-being. Marjorie was very generous, and she loved giving to others. She was exceptionally artistic and had a passion for music. She played the piano for many years as a church pianist and also taught piano lessons in the past. In addition to her musical talent, she loved animals, baking, cooking, shopping, sewing, and engaging in crafts such as crochet, embroidery, and flower-making. She was an avid reader and possessed a vast collection of Seventh-Day Adventist books, as well as cookbooks and music books. Marjorie proved to be a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She cared deeply for her family, her church community, and the many close friends she made throughout her life. Her kindness and love defined her character, and to know her was to genuinely love her.
Marjorie immigrated to the United States in 1968. She married the late Raymond Weekes, with whom she had one child. After his passing, she reunited with her childhood sweetheart and remarried in 1974. Marjorie lived in the U.S. for the remainder of her life, except for a few years when she returned to Honduras and a brief period in Grand Cayman. Although she became a U.S. citizen, she never stopped loving her country of birth and took pride in being Honduran. Marjorie is survived by her husband of 50 years, Earl Banks; her daughter, Eleanor Weekes; her brother, Weward Hurlston; and her cherished niece and nephews, whom she raised, Sherrie, Marvin, Johnny, Hardie, and Willard Hurlston. She is also survived by her grandnephew and grandnieces, Marvin, Saskia, Vashti, Willard, Katya, Angelique, and Aaron Hurlston, as well as great-nephew and great-nieces Jacob, Isabella, and Celeste Hurlston. Additionally, she leaves behind her nieces-in-law, Terelyn Ebanks, Lynn, Ledis, and Risel Hurlston, and her grandniece-in-law, Neyat Hurlston.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Josephine Hurlston, Zennie Delpit, Bernice Weekes-Hogan, Claret Cumberbatch, Margaret Wong, Syvella Cox, and Rose Weekes. Her brothers-in-laws include Joseph Weekes, Don Banks, and David Hogan. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, including Lloyd, Andre, Kevin, Maurice, Katarina, and Kamisha Weekes; Lisa Lashington; Julie Weekes-Smith; Jeffrey and Kurt Cumberbatch; Kimberly Henry; Elizabeth Bossley; Grace Peletier; and Anthony Delpit. She is also remembered by her cousins, Daphne Miller and George Crimmins, along with many cherished cousins, godchildren, close relatives, friends, and neighbors. She will be forever missed.
A visitation will be held on April 20, 2025, from 10:30 am to 11:00 am at the West Park Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 3825 SW 41st St, West Park, FL 33023. The funeral service will follow at the same location from 11:00 am to 1:15 pm.
The committal service will take place on April 20, 2025, from 2:15 pm to 3:00 pm at Bailey Memorial - Garden of Memory, located at 7801 Bailey Rd, North Lauderdale, FL 33068.
