Shirley Gerstman died on November 1, 2019 at her home. She was born in New York City and lived in the Bronx, New York until she moved to Sunrise Florida in the early 1970s. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Hyman (Ty) Gerstman to whom she was devoted. Shirley’s parents, Jonas and Lily Grau and her brother Samuel Grau and sister in law Maxine have all passed. Shirley shared a special relationship with her nephew Eric Gerstman who has also passed on. Shirley is survived by her nephew Marc Gerstman and his partner Christine Costopoulos, her great niece and nephew Antonia and Robert Gerstman and her beloved cousin Dr. Joyce Grossman with whom she spoke every day. She is also survived by her friends from Baltimore and her friends Steven and Judy who were devoted to her.
Shirley was a strong woman who had an irrepressible love of life. She and Ty loved going to Cape Cod where they would attend summer stock theater. They shared their devotion to their special little dog Bamboo. Shirley loved spending time with her brother and sister-in-law Mal and Renee Gerstman. She enjoyed going on cruises with her friend Carol Rubin, attending the Cantor Senior Center in Sunrise and cooking. Shirley knitted up a storm making blankets to keep her family warm. Shirley worked for an accounting firm in New York City prior to the 1970’s and continued her employment with a Jewish social services agency in Florida.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to those that cared for Shirley especially Jackie, Maryelle and Bertha.
