

SHIRLEY SUMNER lived a long and wonderful life and left her footprints in the hearts of many. She made the world a better place for so many of us. She was born on November 18, 1917, in Leesburg, FL to Minnie & George Maurer. She lived in Sunrise, FL for 35 years, as well as in Dallas and Los Angeles. She attended Nursing School in California and later became a Women’s Apparel & Bridal Shop Buyer and owner.
Shirley has left a Legacy and made the world a better place for so many of us. She will long be remembered for her volunteerism at the American Cancer Society, the Boys & Girls Club, the Area Agency on Aging, the City of Sunrise, T.R.I.A.D. and S.A.L.T. Councils, the Library System, Impact Broward, and the West Broward Democratic Club. She also served on the Advisory Boards of the Broward County Library, Broward Homebound, Sunrise Lakes Phase III, Inc 4, HealthSouth, Broward Health and Westside Regional Medical Center. She was an elected DEC member and was inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame in 1994.
SHIRLEY was a major philanthropist, with rooms named in her honor at the ADRC/Aging & Disability Resource Center and the Boys & Girls Club and a significant sculpture gifted to the Sunrise Public Safety Building. She volunteered to help so many people she believed in.
Shirley was married for almost 60 years to MARVIN SUMNER, and is survived by her closest friends, Barbara & Steven Effman, George Stroker and Erica Chance; and family members Ken & Janice Pickett and their grandchildren, Jeremy, Jameson and Jordon Pickett, from Jacksonville, Florida. Shirley died peacefully at her home at Lenox on The Lake, on May 12, 2016, May she Rest In Peace after an amazing life of 98 years. Shirley will be remembered with love and admiration.
