Roger was preceded in death by his parents Marshall Hollis Akins and Daisy Nicholson Akins; brother James Hollis Akins; and infant sister Susan Livinia Akins.
He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years Donna Joan Ward Akins of Sherwood; son Russell Akins (Lisa) of Jacksonville; daughter Karesa Hawkins (Stacy) of North Little Rock; grandchildren, Ryan Akins, Sarah Shehane (Justin), Shelby Bickell (Kyle), Haden Hawkins; great grandchildren, Carter, Brynlee and Hudson Shehane and Rosemary Bickell; brothers Nick Akins (Judy) and Ricky Akins; and sisters Jackie Hallman and Phyllis Stephens (Jimmy); sister-in-law Carolyn Akins; and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces.
Roger retired as a Senior Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and from the Internal Revenue Service. He served during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was a deacon and longtime member of Park Hill Baptist Church and enjoyed attending the Dockins Sunday School class.
Roger enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his loved grandchildren and great grandchildren. In earlier years, he played golf and ran road courses, including marathons.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Akins, Haden Hawkins, Justin Shehane, Kyle Bickell, Mark Akins and Michael Akins Honorary pallbearers are Carter and Hudson Shehane.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home. The funeral service will be officiated by Dr. Ken Shaddox at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home followed by interment, with military honors, at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock at noon Tuesday, March 1.
