He was lovingly known as Walt by his friends and family. He was the seventh of seven sons, born in Concord, New Hampshire on May 3, 1934. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1953, spending his career dedicated to caring for his planes as his way of caring for the men with whom he served. During his time in the Air Force, he served three tours in Vietnam and one tour in Korea. Walt was awarded three Air Force Commendation Medals for distinguished service and meritorious achievement, three Air Force Good Conduct Medals for consistently earning character and efficiency ratings of excellent or higher, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters denoting his 20 years of honorable service. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant at his last duty station in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1973.
Walt then tried his hand at many different ventures from service station management to starting a construction business. He really was a jack of all trades; a mechanic, a blacksmith, an electrician, a plumber… in fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a project he couldn’t complete. Eventually, he settled into his final career as the Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor at Lewis-Palmer School District. He retired from this role after 20 years, and was recognized for his work at Lewis-Palmer in 2015 when he was inducted into the Lewis-Palmer School District Hall of Fame.
Walt worked hard, but he lived and loved hard, too. He married Eleanor Jean DePiazza, the love of his life, on January 1, 1960. They shared in the joy of raising their three beautiful children together. Walter and his wife Eleanor had been residents and community members in Hamburg, Arkansas for the last 18 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nothing more than spending quality time with his family. His loved ones will cherish the memories made of camping, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing, and spending time at the beach. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. To know Walt was to love him.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Ellie Langevin, his parents, Mildred Beard and Henry Langevin, and 5 brothers Eddie, Ray, Willie, Henry, and Ron.
He is survived by his brother, Norman (Norma) Langevin; three children, Sherry Lynn (Daryl) Hornsby, Wilfred Walter (Chad Allen) Langevin, and Steven Lee Langevin; five grandchildren, Sarah (Brad) Fryar, Samantha (Tim) Collier, Shannon Hornsby (fiancé of Bradley Englerth), and Cheyenne and Cody (Briana) Langevin (Steve Langevin and Duetta Allart-Wasson), and two great-grandchildren, Jon Allen Montgomery (Sarah) and Lawrence Everett Collier (Samantha), and step-great-granddaughter Alexia Jade Collier.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to all those involved in the end of life care for both Walt and Ellie: Hospice of Monticello, Ashley County Medical Center, ACMC Home Health, and the team of dear friends who offered love and care in numerous ways. This vibrant and loving support system made it possible for both Walt and Ellie to pass peacefully in the comfort of their own home, for which their family is eternally grateful. Additionally, Walt and Ellie's loved ones would like to thank the wonderful staff at both Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home & Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home for their dedication to ensuring they were treated with love, dignity, and respect as they set out on their journeys to their final resting place, forever united.
Visitation is scheduled for 8:30-9:30 AM on Monday, February 7, 2022 at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home. Funeral service with military honors will be immediately following at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery. Flowers and condolences may be offered at 7724 Landers Rd., North Little Rock, AR 72117. Memorials in his name may be made to Lewis-Palmer School District 38, ATTN. Maintenance and Grounds Department, RE: Walter Langevin Memorial Donation, P.O. Box 40 Monument, Colorado 80132.
