My father’s accomplishments were the ones that truly mattered, the ones that you bring with you to your grave-building a loving family; earning a good name; and doing good deeds. There was nothing more precious to my father than his family and the pride he took in our successes. My father was the foundation for all his family’s accolades, awards, honors, and degrees from prestigious universities. He was a self-taught master of knowledge, whether it was politics, history, entertainment, sports, and importantly for me, medicine. I could ask him about anything, including diseases that I barely understood, and not infrequently find him full of clarity and information. My medical research discoveries, the lives that I have helped, the drugs that I have helped to develop, are all a credit to my dear beloved Dad. He was my greatest teacher, professor, and mentor. When he met my mother Helen Weissman 65 years ago, he was the one who diagnosed her with diabetes, and not only saved her life then, but kept her healthy until today. As an avid reader and subsequent master of the internet, he sent me more articles than anyone else. I owe all my honors and awards to him, as he provided me with foundational knowledge and skills; he was the one who encouraged me to be curious, ask questions, pursue my dreams and importantly he backed me. He backed me when I was in secondary school and converted our apartment bathroom into a chemistry lab; he was the one who drove me through a category 4 hurricane so I could carry out my freelance photography job, resulting in a series of front-page images in the local newspaper. He was the one to cheer for me when I competed in races on the swimming team. He was the one to pick me up from sleep away camp when I was homesick.
