Our mother lived a life as colorful and unapologetic as she was. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she was never one to shy away from an adventure. She moved to New York City to earn her Bachelor’s degree and soon after married our father Ralph Cawley. Together, they welcomed their daughter Cassandra before relocating to Frederiksted, St. Croix, where she gave birth to her son Chad in 1972.
Mom spent much of her career shaping young minds, teaching French and typing at Good Hope School, and later at Country Day School. Her no-nonsense approach left a lasting impression on her students and earned her lifelong friendships, particularly with her dear friends Janice and Martha.
Her resilience shone after Hurricane Hugo, when she relocated to North Miami Beach. There, she worked at Florida International University, reconnected with childhood friends, and found joy in dancing her way through South Florida. She wasn’t just a dancer—she was a force, shaking her hips with a sass and energy that could light up any room.
Evelyn was tough, witty, and sometimes brutally honest, but those who knew her well appreciated her fiercely loyal nature. Her love for travel took her to places like Morocco, Spain, Concan, Texas and a multitude of cruises all over the world where she soaked in the world’s beauty with a curiosity that was uniquely hers.
While our mother’s relationships with her family were complex, her love for us and her grandchildren was undeniable. She was proud of our accomplishments and a devoted grandmother to Brendan, Gabrielle, Kyle, and Cole. Her siblings—Gladys, Monique, Caroline, and Patrick—shared many of her joys and challenges, while the memory of her late brother, Jean-Robert, remained a quiet ache in her heart.
In her later years, she found a second family at Five Star, forming cherished friendships with Mitch, Barbara, Rolando and many more who became an integral part of her daily life. Her leadership skills led her to be elected Resident Council President for several years.
Mom wasn’t one for sugarcoating, but her genuine spirit touched many. She lived unapologetically, danced fiercely, and loved in her own unique way. As we remember her today, we honor a woman who was unyieldingly herself—bold, adventurous, and unforgettable.
Her memory will continue to live on in the laughter she inspired, the lessons she taught, and the many lives she touched.
