As an undergraduate at Notre Dame, Greg earned the nickname “Scoop” while serving as a manager for the 1973 national championship football team. True to that nickname, he always seemed to have the inside scoop on what was happening around campus—a talent further enhanced by his later work with the Sports Information Department. Greg’s deep involvement in campus life continued as president of St. Edward’s Hall and as president of the Hall Presidents’ Council, roles through which he formed many lasting friendships.
After graduating, Greg moved to Singer Island, Florida, where he became a teacher at Cardinal Newman High School. There, he built lifelong friendships with fellow teachers, parents, and students, leaving a meaningful impact on all who knew him.
Greg later returned to Notre Dame to pursue his M.B.A. During that time, he served as a rector in a residence hall, once again forming enduring friendships with classmates, their families, and the undergraduates he mentored—many of whom stayed in close touch with him over the years.
Following his graduate studies, Greg worked at B.F. Goodrich and Hertz before leaving the corporate world to help his parents sell their business. He then returned with them to Florida, settling once more on Singer Island. Greg devoted himself to caring for his parents, enabling them to travel extensively throughout the United States. One of his few regrets was having visited 48 of the 50 states, missing only North Dakota and Hawaii.
Back in Florida, Greg renewed old friendships and made many new ones. He became actively involved with Covenant House in Fort Lauderdale and with the Notre Dame Club of the Palm Beaches. Through both organizations, he generously gave of his time, talents, knowledge, and resources, encouraging and mentoring countless young people.
Greg greatly enjoyed traveling to visit friends and often became embraced as a member of their families. He is survived by his brother Mark and Mark’s wife, Margaux; his nieces, Meaghan and Katie; and his nephew, Brendan. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Jack and Erma Thomas. Many close friends have shared how special Greg—“Scoop”—was to their families and how grateful they were to have him as such an important part of their lives.
