We sadly announce the peaceful passing of our father, Barry Curtis Woods, on August 28, 2023, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Barry was born on January 21, 1942, in Montreal, Quebec. His family moved frequently when he was young, living in both Edmonton and Vancouver, before settling in Chilliwack in the 1950’s. Barry spent many happy summers staying with his maternal grandparents in Chemainus. He met his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Anne Goodrich, at UBC while she was studying Nursing and he was studying Engineering. They were married in December of 1963.
Most of Barry’s career was at BC Telephone Company (now Telus) where he worked as a Civil Engineer until the mid-1990’s, when he retired after dedicating over 30 years of service. In their 53rd year of marriage, Barry lost Betty to cancer.
Barry is survived by his three children, David (Michele), Lisa (George), and Michelle (Daoud), and ten grandchildren - Austin, Taylor, Melea, Annelise, and Mathias (Lisa Brear), Ben and Finn (Michelle Woods), and Hannah, Aimee, and Jack (David Woods).
A very proud man, Barry grew up from very humble beginnings and, together with our mom, Betty, taught his children the importance of honesty, trust, hard-work, service, and dedication to family.
Barry enjoyed many holidays with his family over the years. Camping in B.C., train trips across the States, various road trips and visits to Hawaii. Barry enjoyed his many cruises with Betty, in which they happily explored many parts of the world. It was Barry’s hobby to create elaborate trip binders for each adventure that he went on.
Barry enjoyed listening to and recording music, photography, guitar, and reading. He was a mastermind at maintaining and upgrading his homes and could build or fix just about anything, including rebuilding a car and building a house with a few friends. Curling and playing bridge with friends were other favoured activities. In his quiet way, Barry had a smaller but close group of friends (Wayne/Karen, Paul/Isobel, Max, and Stuart). Over the years, Barry enjoyed seeing his kids build their own families and watching his grandchildren grow.
Barry spent his last couple years at Point Grey Private Hospital, where he was given excellent care and attention. We thank all the staff for providing a professional, warm, and loving environment for him.
As Barry did not wish for a service, any donation to a charity of your choice (such as BC Parkinson Society) would be much appreciated.
Dad, you have lived a life of service and have suffered much in recent years. It is time for you to go home now and rest in peace.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialnorthvancouver.com for the Woods family.
