It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother. Born to Margaret Sandberg and Albert Granzow in North Vancouver, she passed away on a solemn Tuesday afternoon. She married in 1956, at 19, and over the early years of marriage, she had four children: Brad, Tamara, Dixie, and Fernie.
Our mother was a private, philosophical, and spiritual woman. Fifty-five years ago, our father abandoned the family, yet our mother rose to the challenge before her, a single mother with four children; she steadfastly and lovingly stood by us all, wanting us to be responsible, independent, empathetic, and resilient adults. We owe this quiet lady so much it cannot be put into words, and thank her for her love.
During this time, she finished her high school diploma, found employment with the City of Vancouver, and retired at 55. She began travelling, hiking, frequenting the Philosopher's Cafe, volunteering, and taking courses at SFU (enjoying the intellectual stimulation they all provided).
Up until the diagnosis of inoperable cancer, she was an independent and vigorous physical presence, going for walks and shopping in her final year of life. She loved classic British shows, like The Forsyte Saga, Downton Abbey, and Brideshead Revisted. She was an avid reader, and, in her last year with us, she was re-reading The Forsyte Saga, and also novels by Henry James, The Portrait of a Lady and The Golden Bowl. Not surprisingly, she was an avid user of the Burnaby Public Library, and recently, she was introduced to Netflix, which she loved.
We would like to thank the staff at the Burnaby General Hospital and Queen's Park Care Centre over the past year for their kindness and sensitivity. We appreciate all that you do.
