It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Daphne McLean on December 17, 2024, at the age of 95. Daphne was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, and friend who touched the lives of many with her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit.
Daphne was born and raised in Kitsilano to Scottish parents that met at a dance in North Vancouver just after WWI. She had two sisters who she admired and respected throughout her life, Peg and Mary, both deceased. She attended Bayswater Elementary and Kitsilano High Schools respectively. Graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in 1950. In 1951, she married Robert (Bob) Shaw, and together they had three children: Glen, Stacey, and Ian. Daphne and Bob later divorced, and he passed away in 2010. By 1972, Daphne had completed her Masters in Social Work. In this role she helped facilitate the formation of The South Asian Women's Centre in Vancouver and helped establish several group homes in Burnaby. Later, she transitioned to a career as a Real Estate agent.
However, her true passions were her family, painting, and travel. From Boulder to New York and the shores of Ischia, Daphne sought beauty in every corner of the world. She was nurtured by new cultures, which fuelled her creativity. Despite her travels, she was always grateful to return to Canada, her family and the only home she ever knew or desired to live in, Vancouver. Her work with the International Centre For Earth Renewal and her devotion to art and environmental causes reflected her deep-rooted love for our planet.
Daphne will be remembered for her warm heart, her generosity, and her ability to bring joy to those around her. Her legacy will live on through the countless memories she created with her loved ones. In her own words “I am a people person”.
She is survived by her children, Glen (partner Sandy) and Ian (partner Kaye), her five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Daphne's daughter Stacey and her husband Bill both passed away in 2010 and 2018, respectively. They are survived by their two adult children Erin (partner Taylor) and Brent (partner Marina). Daphne's presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Daphne's life.
