David Maurice Knollys Foster was born in London on March 7, 1929 to parents Maurice and Elizabeth followed not long after by his baby sister Susan. After years away attending public schools David served a short time in the British Armed Forces and attended Harrow and Malvern college before boarding a ship to Canada in 1955 as a representative for British Steel. It was on that ship he met his first wife Mary and in the fall of 1956 that courtship turned to marriage in Lafayette Indiana and the newlyweds came to adopt a new home in Vancouver BC.
Ultimately settling in West Vancouver, the couple set out raising their 3 children; Katherine, Mark and John as well as a myriad of German Shepherds and cats. David built a family summer home in 108 Mile House creating a place for a lifetime of childhood memories. Without any immediate family close by, Mary and David formed a diverse, close group of friends, some becoming surrogate uncles, aunts, godparents and even grandparents to our family.
David went on to many achievements in his business career, but it was his athletic achievements in squash, golf and cricket for which he gained most notoriety. Founding the Evergreen Squash club and winning multiple Western and Canadian championships. Boasting 7 holes-in-one during his 50+ years as a member of Capilano Golf & CC. Captain of Canadian Cricket team playing against Australia and England.
David retired in 1984 and he and Mary took up travel and moved to North Vancouver where they lived happily until Mary’s tragic death from cancer in 2008.
David met his current wife, Christina, a few years later and the pair found the second chance at love with Christina also having lost her first husband to cancer. With a fresh start the two were married on June 8th, 2013 and spent the last 10 years travelling and exploring with a new sense of romance. Travel, dancing and laughter continued right up to the start of Covid and brought a life marked in love, friendship and achievement to a happy end. David was fortunate to have a second go at love and family and is now fortunate to be back with his loving Mary.
Arrangements are being made through Boal Chapel Memorial Gardens in North Vancouver for a private family service. Donations in memory of David can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the BCSPCA. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.firstmemorialnorthvancouver.com.
“My Journey’s Just Begun
Don’t think of me as gone
My journey’s just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is but one
Just think of me as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think of how I must be wishing
That you could know today
How nothing but your sadness
Can really go away
And think of me as living
In the hearts of those I touched
For nothing loved is ever lost
And I know I was loved so much”
