On her ninetieth birthday, our mom Elda, received a card with a note that read “Keep on living”. And she did! She lived for nine more years passing away at 99 years old, passing away peacefully on May 30, 2025 at Dufferin Care Center.
Elda Angelina Allegretto(nee Fioretto) was born May 8, 1926 in San Foca, Italy to Adelaide and Angelo Fioretto. She met Luigi while he was home from working in Trieste. He wooed her in the cow barns during the winter months with her grandmother acting as chaperone. They were married for sixty years until Luigi’s death in 2009. Luigi first came to Canada in 1949 and mom followed a year later. They settled in Trail, B.C. where they raised their three children Rita, Roger and Maryann.
For nonna or bisnonna as she was lovingly called, family always came first. She relished hearing stories of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, even when she began suffering from dementia the last years of her life. Nonna was so proud of us all. Providing us with Italian meals and delicacies brought her great joy. Many boxes were sent from Trail by way of the Greyhound bus filled with jars of antipasto, spaghetti sauce and of course panettone. They kept coming even after we outgrew the starving student phase of our lives. She touched our lives with selfless love, generosity and humour. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. She leaves behind Rita(Andrew), Roger(Kathy) , Maryann(Doug), seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. ( tenth great grandchild is on the way)
Our mom always wished for us: Coraggio(courage), Pace(peace), Salute(good health), Lavoro( hard work/livelihood). We will continue to strive to achieve these goals.
Thank you to the staff of Seton Villa where she lived for many years and Dufferin Care Center where she lived these last five months. Thank you to the friends and family who visited our mom throughout her stay at Seton Villa and Dufferin Care Center. A big thank you to Richard, Michele and Andrea Allegretto for all the support, care and love you gave our mom all these years.
