With deepest of sorrows we announce the passing of Elvin William Meyers, three hours before midnight on December 30, 2020. Elvin was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and volunteer whose sunny smile, humour, and positivity were cherished by all.
Elvin and his sister, Elaine (d. November 11, 2016) were born on December 31, 1937. The family moved to Golden, BC, soon after.
Elvin attended the University of British Columbia, aged 16, and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelors of Arts, and Business Administration and Commerce degree.
On July 1, 1961 Elvin married Deanna Lorraine Maki (d. June 10, 2008) in Salmon Arm, BC, Deanna’s place of birth.
Elvin began his career with the Hudson’s Bay Company, then London Life Insurance in Victoria, BC. In 1965, he began a fifteen year tenure as a personnel manager with MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. at the Sproat Lake division. M&B were the largest logging firm in the world at the time, the next transfer was to nearby Franklin River, the world’s largest logging camp in that era.
The family transferred five more times, the longest stays being in Juskatla, and Nanaimo, BC.
In 1982, Elvin won a bowling trip to Reno, Nevada. On the way to the tournament, Elvin met Sheilagh Diane Lang (d. July 30,2017). Sheilagh and Elvin were immediately smitten after meeting on the bus ride. Sheilagh, new to BC, chaperoned the trip to Nevada. It was one of her first duties as president of the Bowling Proprietor’s Aasocation of BC. They married on September 2, 1983 in Nanaimo, BC.
Elvin and Sheilagh spent over thirty years traveling and working, side by side, Sheilagh as president and Elvin the treasurer of Bowl BC.
They both travelled extensively during their time together, and traversed Canada from coast to coast sponsoring youth bowling, and Bowl BC participated with the Variety Club of BC for over thirty years, as well as volunteering with the telethon every year. Elvin volunteered weekly assisting bowlers in need of scoring at Sunshine Lanes. Bowling brought them together, and the sport gave as much to them as they gave to it.
Elvin was an active member of the BC Genealogical Society, and also served a term as treasurer. His interest in genealogy was inspired by family tree research, manually done by his cousin Juanita Powell in Excello, Missouri, USA.
Elvin entertained everyone with his historical anecdotes and philosophical wisdoms. His biographical and familial
articles are archived
in the Golden, BC museum.
Elvin enjoyed fishing in his younger years, and photography and genealogy in his latter years.
Elvin passed away in Surrey, and is interred at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Niche 4202, Level 2 in Scarborough, Ontario, Sheilagh’s birthplace.
He is survived by his two children, Christopher and Whitney, along with many nieces and nephews and their children. Elvin will forever be missed by all who knew him.
Please donate to your local Cancer Society in his memory.
