on December 16, 2021. She was born April 16, 1918 in Kinistino, Saskatchewan to Robert and
Luzella Rutherford. She spent her school years in Kinistino where she was close to her Ellis
relatives, especially her cousin, Babe.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Robert Andrew Heggie ( July 23, 2000 ) who she
married in July, 1938. She is survived by 3 children: Patricia Lou Lainsbury, Kamloops, Robert
Wade Heggie ( Betty Ann ), Toronto and Kathleen Ann Hunter, North Vancouver. She also leaves
behind seven grandchildren: Gregory Lainsbury, Jeffery Lainsbury( Barb Luten) , Louise Heggie,
Elizabeth Heggie, Genevieve Hunter (Braden Facco ), Jacqueline Hunter, Alexandra Hunter and
two great grandchildren, Ezra Lainsbury and Ivy Facco.
Our mother spent the war years ( WW2) working in her father’s corner store in Victoria and
raising her daughter, Patricia while her husband served overseas in the RAF/RCAF. Upon Bob’s
return, they moved back to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where Bob returned to University of
Saskatchewan to get a Bachelor of Law degree. The family grew with the birth of Wade in
1946, then 8 years later, Kathy. Evelyn was a stay-at-home mother who was a good cook and
baker. She was noted for her sugar cookies, cinnamon buns and salad dressing. She was a
great hostess and support to her husband who was in civic, then provincial politics. When
Kathy was in grade 6, Evelyn got her driver’s licence and entered the work force, first in real
estate then owning her own Travel agency. This provided many trips to different parts of the
world.
Our mother loved music ( she played the piano) and socializing with people over food and
drinks. She had a twinkle in her eye and a natural charisma which drew people to her. She
volunteered at Highlands United Church into her early 90’s and enjoyed doing handicrafts with
friends.
Evelyn was a devoted mother and grandmother and assumed the matriarchal role in the family.
She will be fondly remembered by family and friends as an energetic, social woman who made
the most of her 103 years. She had a practical acceptance of life’s challenges.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Victoria in the spring/summer of 2022 where she
will be laid to rest beside her husband and parents at Hatley Memorial Gardens.
