CLARANCE-Florence Marjorie (nee Garrett) born June 30, 1923, in Davidson Saskatchewan passed away May12, 2024 in North Vancouver, BC.
Predeceased by her husband Doug in 2003, she will be missed by her sons Greg (lori), Rod (Melanie), and Neal “Tigger” (Anna). She will also be missed by grandchildren Jessica, Jeffrey and Rebecca by Linda and Tessa and Conor, 6 great grandchildren and numerous family and friends around the world.
Marj’s earliest years in Saskatchewan were followed by homes in Vancouver BC., St. Hyacinthe PQ., Vancouver (UBC), Kingston Ont., Dorval PQ., Baie d’Urfe PQ, Oakville Ont, Gabriola Island BC. and North Vancouver BC.
Her Saskatchewan memories include vacations at Manitoba Lake in 1930 and summer dances with her sister Dot at Watrous Lake in 1935.
It was at King George High School in Vancouver’s west end that Marj met Doug, apparently her date for a Sadie Hawkins Day dance. Marj excelled at all sports, (tennis, skiing, ice skating and golf in her later years). Alongside her best friend June Soper (Lake), tennis shone brightest, and many championships were won in Western Canada. Marj spent the war years working as a bookkeeper, balancing year end books, a job not normally done by women at the time.
After her January 3, 1945, wedding with Doug, the two located to Ste. Hyacinthe PQ for Doug’s, war time, navy discharge.
Next, the two of them relocated back to Vancouver and UBC while Doug pursued his chemical engineering degree. Shortly before gradation, Greg was born.
After Doug’s graduation the two of them headed east. This time to Kingston Ont where Rod was born.
A few years and a job change later, Marj and Doug moved further down highway 401. The first few years were lived in Dorval PQ. It was here that Marj and Doug’s deep nucleus of lifelong friends were formed, and they completed their family with the birth of Neal “Tigger”.
Next, it was in Baie d’Urfe that Marj raised her family through all the boys school years. Despite the hectic schedule of raising three boys, Marj managed to find time to continue her love of sports, pursuing a passion for curling, cross country skiing and golf. She was also an avid fan, watching and enquiring about sports results for her entire 100 years. She also enjoyed her fishing summers at Lac Marcotte with both family and friends.
With the boys out of the house and Quebec threatening to leave confederation Marj and Doug relocated to Oakville Ont. “Empty nesters” finally, weekend adventures and world travels increased. Along with their many close friends the two of them lived the final years of Doug’s work life to the fullest.
By 1984 all three of her sons were living on the west coast, and the decision was made to once again head back west. This time to Gabriola Island. Marj and Doug’s retired life was rich indeed. Family visits were prioritized highest but what with meeting up with friends, golf, fishing, gardening,
continued travel, yearly reunions, etc... there was very little downtime. The two of them surely knew how to “retire”.
Marj lived on independently on Gabriola for almost a decade after Doug passed away. Then to be closer to her family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and perhaps to return to her original roots, she relocated to North Vancouver where she lived the rest of her 100-year life.
Adjectives often used to describe Marj include, “warm, caring, loving, gentle, smart, etc.…the list is almost endless. She was a very good person. She will be greatly missed.
A service will be held in The Boal Chapel on the grounds of First Memorial Funeral Services, North Vancouver, 1505 Lillooet Road, V7J2J1. On June 8, 2024, at 10am.
