Joyce Davies passed peacefully at the age of 96, in her home with her loving caregiver Tess at her side.
Joyce was born in Worcester Park, Surrey, London on March 28, 1924. She graduated with a degree in Medicine from Bristol University in 1947 and specialized in chest diseases, with a particular interest in tuberculosis. She immigrated to Canada in the late 1950s, helping to treat TB among the Inuit. Subsequently, she settled in Vancouver. She worked as a physician on the MV Columbia, serving communities along the coast of BC. She specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and worked at several hospitals including G. F. Strong, Lions Gate Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital. She took great pride in her work and helping others.
Joyce was a strong independent woman, who approached life with determination and conviction. She had a good sense of humour and a loving heart.
Joyce enjoyed her garden. She pursued a wide variety of outdoor activities including kayaking, skiing, and mountain climbing, where she made many lifelong friends. She had a great interest in nature and anything to do with wildlife and habitat. She welcomed family members to her home and enthusiastically shared all things Canadian, especially BC.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents Bertram Rees and Eudora Mary Davies and her three brothers Leonard, Michael and Ernest. She is survived by her nephew Martin Davies (Sally) and niece Frances Coster (Hugh).
A private Celebration of Life will be held at First Memorial’s Boal Chapel in North Vancouver.
